English Courses for Seniors in London

We welcome mature students of all ages, who are “young at heart” on all courses throughout the year. In addition, the school can organise social activities which suit the more mature student’s interests.

    * 20 lessons (50 minutes each) + afternoon activities
    * Course length: 1-4 weeks
    * Minimum age: 50
    * Elementary to Intermediate levels

Please note that the English lessons in the mornings are the school’s regular English Course, so you might be in class with students of any age (the minimum age of the school is 16 years old). If you absolutely don’t want to be with much younger students, the school offers one-to-one courses.

Sample Activities:

- Tower Bridge & Borough Market: The perfect tour for food-lovers! Visit London’s great food market and sample the delicious local and European produce. Follow this with a walk along the River Thames to see the beautiful views of Tower Bridge. Nearby attractions include the Tate Modern and Southwark Cathedral.

- St James’ Park, Buckingham Palace & Trafalgar Square: Walk through one of London’s most picturesque parks on the way to the Queen’s official London residence. Then see the beautiful collection of art at the famous National Gallery in Trafalgar Square.

- Hampstead Heath & Tea at Kenwood House: Enjoy a delicious traditional English Afternoon Tea of scones and jam in the beautiful surroundings of Kenwood House. This former 17th Century stately home also exhibits some beautiful paintings from well known artists. After tea, you can walk around the stunning gardens.

- Westminster Walking Tour: Tour some of London’s most iconic landmarks along the River Thames. Visit Westminster Abbey, where many of our monarchs were crowned, and view “Poets’ Corner” where Britain’s greatest writers are honoured.

- Beer tasting in a Traditional English Pub: Learn the difference between bitter, ale and beer while you chat with your teacher and experience the very English atmosphere of a traditional pub. You may choose to stay for dinner! In the last few years, London has produced some excellent “gastro-pubs” which offer some very good menus including traditional favourites such as fish & chips or steak & kidney pie.

- Victoria & Albert Museum and Harrods, Knightsbridge: Visit the world’s largest museum of international art and design including the fascinating theatre and performance gallery. Harrods, one of the most famous and impressive department stores in the world, is a short walk away.

40+ English Courses for Seniors in London and Totnes

Age 40+ is an English programme for mature learners, who want a holiday with some language practice - and to spend time meeting other people.

Our course is based on Cultural Experience, which is an alternative way to improve your communication skills in English.

This programme was originally developed by our London school in 2005 and was awarded the British Council prize for innovation in English teaching the following year.

The course is designed to make learning more memorable and to help you make the most of your stay in London or Totnes. Each lesson is taught outside the school in a local place of interest and cultural heritage.

In London you learn English through its varied world of museums and art galleries.
In Totnes you learn English on a journey through castles, countryside and the unexpected.

Each day is a special English lesson with a different cultural topic. You will be encouraged to learn new vocabulary and take part in discussions. The lessons are very relaxed, so don't worry if you haven't studied for a long time!

On your Age 40+ holiday, you will also have three extra afternoon or evening activities. These change during the year but include a welcome drink in the pub, a guided tour, tickets to a play or concert, cream tea... we try to arrange what is best depending on the time of year.

And if you are feeling adventurous and want the holiday of a lifetime, then we recommend you do one week in London and then one week in Totnes... and we will arrange everything for you.

Why is Age 40+ for you?

- You want a holiday where you will improve your English.
